What if Doctor Who was made in America? A question many have asked after seeing this BBC saga known as Doctor Who. Here I wrote what I believed would have happen if they show was made in the U.S. in this alternative history of the show.
1st Doctor (1963 - 1966) Whit Bissel
In the Spring of 1962 The American Broadcasting Company (ABC) commissioned a new sci-fi program dealing with time traveling due to positive feedback from focus groups and reports. As production began and scripts were being written producers looked at actors to filled in as the show main protagonist,The Doctor. Producers wanted Whit Bissell to play the time travelling hero due to his long and impressive career in both stage and film. Executive producers Quinn Martin and Davi Levy believed that Whit Bissel would bring a strong fan base due to his cult status from his series of sci-fi films such as The Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and the original 1954 Creature from the Black Lagoon. After a few meetings Whit agreed and took the role as long as he could be given creative input for the series.
Soon after the show aired it became a hit with both children and adult.
The first pilot episode of the series, "An Unearthly Life", received low attention due to news coverage of President John F. Kennedy's assassination. However the second episode title, "The Daleks" caught the imaginations of viewers and was well received. It was the same episode that introduce the 'TARDIS" which was the shape shifting space ship for the Doctor that was fixed into being a phone box to humans. The show soon began to ingrain itself into pop culture. The programme became a great success, frequently drawing large numbers, which cause aliens and sets to be made for the series. As the third season came it became clear that Whit would not carry on playing the Doctor for a much longer due to wanting to move on to other projects. In his last episode "The 10th Planet" We saw the Doctor fall to the ground dying of old aged and soon began to regenerate into a new body. This idea was made by producers to replace Whit with a new actor in a way that fit within the world of Doctor who. Quinn Martin stated " we needed to replace the actor but not the doctor so we came up with this idea that had a alien feel to it and gave us a way for future actors to take on the phone box."
2nd Doctor (1966 - 1969) Harry Dean Stanton
Actor Harry Dean Stanton came to the role as the 2nd Doctor. Producers picked Harry after seeing his role in the show Johnny Ringo believing he was a strong candidate to follow, Whit and lead the show. Harry brought a younger feel to the Doctor which would be more friendly and mobile. Harry describe his doctor as " a cosmic hobo with an edge." Stanton also stated "He has gone from a father figure to more of your favorite uncle who lets you have more fun." Fans and critics welcomed the warmer, gentler Doctor as they grew on his clever and kind persona. This incarnation of the Doctor had a love for playing the flute which became a recurring theme in the show. However much like Whit, Harry felt that three years on the show was enough and feared that he would only be seen as the Doctor. Now with the regeneration being part of the Doctor's mytho, fans quickly became excited to see a new face. The 2nd Doctor finale episode" The cost of WAR" he was put to trail by his fellow race of Time Lords ,The Time Lords as well as the newly elected Time Lord President, Rassilon for breaking their golden rule of interacting with human history. The Time Lords banned the Doctor to earth for 100 years with out any further contact with his home planet. As the episode ended the Doctor enter his ship to only discover it has been poisoned causing a regeneration to happen. The 2nd Doctor last words were" A new face for a new adventure"
3rd Doctor (1970 - 1974) Bill Bixby
The 3rd Doctor is introduce post being poisoned by who he believed to be the Time Lord High Command. As the Tardis lands back to Earth as the door open we see a fresh Doctor played by Bill Bixby. New show writer, Kenneth Johnson picked Bixby to play the doctor due to them having very close ideals for the show future and as well for his acting range. Bixby wanted to explored and expanded upon the Doctor's history and the psychology of the Time Lords. The 3rd Doctor personality was shown to still reflect the past incarnations good and compassionate nature. However this, Doctor became more of an enforcer of the earth battling weekly aliens and monsters. The Doctor also began investigating who poisoned him as well as looking for a way to gain his freedom to travel across space. The 3rd Doctor also introduce the
"Sonic Drive" which is a tool given by his father in his youth, this tool became a series regular. The sonic drive was used to get the Doctor out of any trap as well as help heal injuries. Kenneth Johnson wrote in this device wanting the show to use more of "out of this world" tech.
Shortly after the 3rd Doctor new life we are introduce to a new villain who poisoned the 2nd Doctor, The Master played by Morgan Woodward. Writers wanted to give the Doctor a villain who was a refection of himself. In an interview Bill Bixby stated "we wanted a yin for the the Doctor's yang. We wanted someone who would push him to his limits."
The show new main antagonist, The Master, a fellow Time Lord underwent significant development throughout the course of the series. Although initially perceived as cynical and evil in the beginning, the viewer's sympathy for The Master increases as it is revealed that the Master is trying to avoid death due to a fear of the afterlife without any remaining regenerations. Gradually becoming more desperate to steal the Doctors future regenerations.
After three years Kenneth Johnson left Doctor Who to work and develop a new show for CBS title "The Hulk". With Johnson leaving, Bixby wanted to move on from the show and work on The Hulk which Bixby would later get the lead. In the 3rd Doctor last episode "The Eight Legged Planet" The Doctor's mind goes to a spider planet to stop an invasion from taking place as his physical body remain in his Tardis which was pilot by his companions. Due to an attack on his ship by the Master, the Doctor awakens to telaport his companions to safety. However the Tardis crashes and the Doctor falls to his death. The 3rd Doctor spoke his final words before his regeneration " I fought off my fears and saved the earth..I lived a great life..goodbye".
4th Doctor ( 1974 - 1981) Gene Wilder
After falling to his death, the Third Doctor regenerates into the next Doctor, played by Gene Wilder. Many fans were shocked to see an Academy award nominated actor take on the role of the Doctor. Producers revealed that Gene was their first choice to call for the role and were surprise on how quickly here accepted. Gene stated that he was a fan of the show and good friends with Harry Dean Stanton who at one time joked about him being a future doctor. In this new incarnation, the Doctor is awaken to see his Tardis now destroy by the crash and soon visited by members of the Time Lord High Command. It is revealed that the his exile to earth has been lifted due to stopping the spider invasion. The High Command believed that they were working with the Daleks. The High Command also rebuilt the Tardis for the new Doctor. The 4th Doctor now free he was more than
ready to travel space and seek out new worlds. The show soon brought in the creation of S.W.O.R.D. ( Space World Observation and Response Department) A group of government elite officers fighting off aliens on earth. The group was started by Jack McCormick who was the son of Neil McCormick ,a WW2 soldier that the 2nd Doctor saved in"The cost of WAR". Jack McCormick and S.W.O.R.D was brought in the show to give it more of a human element as well as to show how the Doctor has change the world with his present. This idea by producers to have a spin off show title "SWORDfish" which never took off.
The 4th Doctor was far more distance than his other past incarnations. He would switch from seemly not to care for others to a hero willing to save the life of others at the cost of his own. However somewhere in his two extremes he would find his old whimsical charm, offbeat humour and witty thinking. As the show went on the 4th Doctor was also the first to show feelings towards his companion ,Lisa Jane which were implied in a few episode but never developed more than a that.
After seven years Gene Wilder became the longest running actor to hold the tile of the Doctor. This
became possible due to the show removing its shooting schedule to keep Gene on the show long term. However after seven years Gene Wilder became ready to move on and left with a three part season finale title "The Valley of Death" which feature the Doctor discovering the Time Lord president Rassilon has made a new weapon called ,The Matter which would trigger a black hole on any planet its on. Rassilon believed this was needed in case if a war would break out between the Time Lord and any other alien race. It is later reveal that The Matter was moved to earth by the Master who also influenced Rassilon to created it to hold the planet as hostage. The Master only price was a new life cycle which only the current Time Lord president could allow. However the Master triggered the The Matter causing a cosmic black hole. However the Master being unaware of the speed and power of the Matter is trap inside at it very core. The Doctor without any hesitation telaports inside the Matter with his sonic drive to to reverse its effect . As the Doctor slowly stops Matter he witness the Master disappear as he is believed to been killed by the cosmic energy. Soon after returning back to Lisa , The Doctor cells began to die as a regeneration started to take place. He confessed to Lisa he knew the Matter would have killed him but he has prepared for such a moment His final words he whispered " It was only a matter of time I suppose".
5th Doctor (1981 - 1984) Jeff Daniels
After the 4th Doctor heroic death many viewers couldn't see another actor become the Doctor. With a new era of the show came a new show head producer, Richard Hatch who picked young new upcoming actor, Jeff Daniels for the title role. Daniels was told by Gene Wilder to only stay on the show for three years to avoid being typecast. The 5th Doctor was much calmer and more human than his past incarnation as well as blending in much more with humans. This Doctor became more grounded with a political sense. The Doctor would go on and help his home world fight their leaders and start a revolution to save his planet's government. This new political element was brought into the show to attractive older views and to add real world problems in space. The show new tone was well receive and many felt the Daniels was a fitting Doctor to carry on Wilder's legacy. The 5th Doctor did however run into old faces and had a retelling of his first meeting with The Master in the episode "My Oldest Friend" which Daniels wrote and directed. This also saw the return of the Master who had place his subconscious into the hardrive of a damaged Cyberman.
After three years Daniels took Wilder advice and decide not to renew his contract for another season of the show. The 5th Doctor finale appearance was in the episode "The Caves of Time" which had the 5th Doctor meet his past self Doctors 1 to 4 to team up to save their home world from a civil war. They come across a future incarnation who remain hidden in the shadows of the Caves of Time who warns them of a "great war" that will leave their world lost. The 5th Doctor took it as the civil war was among them unless he could save their government. The 5th Doctor discover a assassination plan on all members of the Time Lord High Command by the hand of Rassilon on order to keep his power. During the assassination attempt, The Doctor uses his body as a shield protecting one of the members of the High Command from Rassilon's cosmic ray. Now shown as a madman in front of the High Command, Rassilon is quickly sent away in their prison system. However the great energy of the ray were too much for the 5th Doctor to handle. He only had enough energy left to say his last goodbyes to his companion, Page. His last words were " my past helped me see my future and I can safety say this is just the start.." as The 5th Doctor began to regenerate.
6th Doctor (1884-1986) William Katt
The 6th Doctor was played by actor William Katt who was fresh off his successful show "The Greatest American hero" who was a fan of the show. William was originally cast early on to appear in the "Caves of Times" finale to warn the 5th Doctor of a dark future. However producers deiced to use a Doctor who was implied to be his "off the book" incarnation. The 6th Doctor awoken shortly after the arrest of Rassilon, The doctor was taken to a medical center where the High Command believed that his new regeneration should not be known. They believed the doctor "death" would impact their alien race and end this civil dispute before it could lead into a war. The 6th Doctor didn't agreed with this but understood that a fallen hero was something their world needed. The Doctor now leaving his world seem bitter living a lie in order to keep peace among the time lords.
Producers wanted to give the show a "blue period" where the Doctor was lost and needed to find himself. The 6th Doctor was shown to be more rebellious and more aggressive than any, Doctor before. Katt stated he was all in favor for a darker show and believe it would help him stand out of the past Doctors. Katt view his doctor as "a wild teenage son of the first who didn't listen to the rules and couldn't stand still to save his life" This new trait came when producer,Richard Hatch allowed Katt to have creative control on his title role as well as a new team of writers. The new direction of the show gain mixed reviews. Some viewers didn't enjoy with the show loosing its mature tone in favor of a loose canon Doctor. However some did enjoy the new season just for that same reason. However the show unfortunately fell short in story quality due to the first season of the show mostly consist of the Doctor finding a new partner in crime and solving one story arch problems. The only story the season had was the 6th Doctor learning to control his anger and wild compulsions. A drop in rating cause a new writing staff to be hired. In an interview relating the firing of the writers, Katt stated " The problem was the for any ten ideas me and the writers would come up with the producers would cut off nine.We had these ideals that would push the show to new heights but they were just
scared. I mean at one point the producers wanted to give me a robot dog which did not sit well with me " ABC was unhappy with Katt interview and strip him of creative control for his remaining time on the show. The second season of the 6th Doctor gain more fair reviews with the 6th Doctor returning back to Gallifry. The 6th Doctor second season opening episode title "Turn,Turn,Turn" showed the return of the Master in a new body played by Anthony Perkins. Master reveal that he transferred his mind onto the body of a comatose Time Lord which he deem "worthy".
The 6th Doctor was able to stop the Master plot to travel back in time to stop the 4th Doctor from shutting down the The Matter with the help of a returning 2nd Doctor. The return of the 2nd Doctor was an idea that Harry Dean Stanton had and told producers that he was free for a single episode comeback. However despite positive feedback this season would show to be Katt last with "The Trial of A Hero"being his finale episode as the Doctor. In the finale The Doctor must save his companion, Susie from the Daleks and the Cyber-men. The finale ends with The Doctor triggering a force regeneration on himself in order for him to take a blood sample of his body as his cells began to heal to save a dying, Susie. The 6th Doctor last words were " I've been reckless, but I'm not a rebel without a cause..."
7th Doctor (1987 - 1989) Martin Short
After the release of William Katt from the show, a new actor was needed to fill the title role. Many viewers were shocked to see a regeneration very early on in the 6th Doctor run in the show. It was later reveal that creative differences between producers and William Katt cause his early leave. This lead to the casting of comedic actor Martin Short who was brought in to return the show to its roots. Martin was a surprise choice that cause many to question the show decision making skills. The 7th Doctor took the show back to basic and became more grounded much like his 3rd incarnation. Many of his episode focus on real world issues that hit close to home for many viewers. This came from new producer, Joseph Stern who who wanted to bring the Doctor into a 'cop drama feel". The 7th Doctor spent his time helping those everyday people with problems that range from being homeless to drug addiction. The season high point by many viewers was the episode "Never Let Me Go" that would later get nominated for an Emmy. The episode many feel sums up the 7th Doctor perfectly which feature him meeting an orphan runaway by the name of 'Willow"and helping her find a family of her own as well as learning where she came from. Many viewers respect the mature handle of the touchy subject mater and it realism. The story arch continued in "Everything's Great" which showed Willow being adopted by Jack McCormick and his former companion Lisa Jane
Unfortunately this didn't save the show from being canceled by ABC and the last episode of the season was reedit with extra footage in order to give the Doctor a proper sent off. The 7th Doctor last episode title "Till We Meet Again"The Doctor revisited old faces such as Jack and Neil McCormick as well as receiving a phone call by the 5th and 6th Doctors. The Doctor is last seen by Willow who ask him where is will he go with the 7th Doctor replying " The fun is not knowing where and when I'm going but something tells me you,ll see me again. Goodbye"The final shot is the Tardis flying into space with highlights of all the past Doctors. Not long after the show cancellation ABC believed they could still keep the show in one way or another via audio dram and comic books. Martin Short returned to voice the audio dramas and wrote a few of the comic books to feature the 7th Doctor.
8th Doctor (1996) Noah Wyle

During an inter for the Power Ranger film Amy Jo Johnson stated " Me and Noah are very happy with the film.We both think it's gonna open the door for new fans. And to be honest, Noah is pretty happy that might not get a part 2 because now it can be a cult film. Which is way cooler than a summer hit."The following summer Marvel Comics teamed up with ABC to produce a comic series of the 8th Doctor. The series gain notices with positive feedback from both Doctor who fans and comic readers. However that left Doctor Who out of television until 2005.

The 9th Doctor was shown to be the last survivor of the "Great Time War" which took place after sometime of the events of the 8th Doctor's trip in London. The 9th Doctor showed subtle yet noticeable signs of PTS,being haunted by his actions in the war.
